A very costly fabric of the 13th to 16th centuries, made of silk and richly decorated with gold ornament - used for church vestments. -
2 Bearing Cloth
The mantle or cloth used to cover a child when it was carried to baptism, generally decorated with lace or fringe. May be of any style of cloth. In 1623 " five yards of damaske to make a bearing cloth " is bought at a cost of ???3 6 s. 6 d., and, in addition, " for taffetie to lyne it " 32 s., and " for lace to ornament it," eleven ounces, 57 s. 6 d. -
3 Arras Cloth
A loosely woven fabric made from jute, in wide widths, dyed, used for curtains, table and cushion covers. A better cloth is made from coarse linen yarns as below: - 46 X 42, 50 / 42's linen, plain weave. The term was first applied to woven stuffs made at Arras, France, in the 14th century, which were decorated with simple patterns for use as hangings in rooms. It was originally called Opus Saracenicum. -
4 Elytra Cloth
This term denotes fine muslins and other fabrics, formerly made in Bengal and hand decorated by skilled natives with the wings of beetles. Qualities varied greatly. -
